How to Label Your Breaker Box in One Afternoon

By a career tradesman · TheTradesmanShop

The power goes out in one room and you are flipping breakers in the dark, guessing. An outlet is sparking and you need it dead right now, but the panel says bedroom question mark and three breakers marked spare that are definitely not spare. Here is how to fix that in one afternoon.

What you need

A buddy, a phone or radio to talk to each other, painter's tape, and a marker. That is the whole toolkit. One person stays at the panel. The other walks the house.

The method

Turn off breaker number one. The walker goes room to room testing lights and outlets, and calls back what went dead. Write it on tape and stick it next to the breaker. Turn it back on. Move to breaker two. Work straight down the panel so you do not skip one.

Test everything, not just lights. Outlets, the disposal, the microwave, the garage door opener, outdoor outlets. The weird stuff is always on a breaker you would never guess.

Make the directory

Once every breaker is taped, make the real directory. A simple table on paper: breaker number, what it controls, and any notes. Tape it inside the panel door. Take a photo of it with your phone so you always have it.

What you never touch

The main lugs at the top of the panel stay live even with the main breaker off. You are only flipping breaker switches and sticking tape on the panel door. You are not removing the panel cover or touching anything inside. If the panel looks damaged, rusted, or scorched, stop and call an electrician.

Test your GFCIs monthly

While you are at it, press the test button on every GFCI outlet in the house, then reset it. If one will not reset, it needs replacing. Monthly takes thirty seconds and it is the outlet that saves you in the bathroom and kitchen.
